From Mike: Write Reflection Comments on Interviews here

Students,

I hope your interviews went really well.  Please write a short reflection about your interview in the Comments section of this post.  That way we can see everyone's Comments on one place under this post.

1)  How do you feel about the interview now that you are done?  What went well?  What challenges did you face?
2)  Have you started your transcripts?  How many hours of work do you estimate it is going to take you to finish the transcripts?
3)  What themes (for example: goals and dreames, family, work, creativity, sacrifice, etc.) stood out to you as most interesting in the interview?

  1. I feel like my interview went really well. Mr. Zuber answered my questions really in depth, and even answered some of my questions before I could ask them. A challenge I faced was time, my interview was 96minutes and I still could not get through all my questions. Also Mr. Zuber talked a little quiet so it was hard to hear him at times along with the noises of my surrounding environment. I have not started my transcript yet, but I feel like it will take me close to two or three hours. The theme that stood out to most in the interview was about going through hardships in life to mold you into a better person.

  2. I honestly feel that my interview could have gone better. I struggled to keep the conversation flowing as the person I interviewed was initially giving short responses back and was hard to have a general flow of a conversation. I have started my transcript over the weekend and i believe after the hour and a half i worked on it already it will still take me at least that much longer to finish typing it. What really stood out to me was why he chose the path he did. I was not expecting his anwser.

  3. My interview definitely could have gone better, I didn't have very much informal speech on my part, I didn't really have a good flow of questions in how I asked them, and It was also very short, and I was pretty nervous/awkward for the duration. However, I was also told I did a good job, so it probably could have been worse.

  4. I feel relieved to have it over. The interview went pretty well and not as stressful as i had imagined. It was hard getting the person I interviewed to open up at first, but once he did it was good. It was nice, he answered some questions I had written down, without me asking. I just finished my transcripts and it took me almost 3 hours to get it all written up. What stood out to me the most is that even though he owns the restaurant he still says it belongs to the community. A lot of what he does is for the community. He doesn't want to grow, he just wants to maintain what he has and make it the best it can be.

  6. 1. I feel relieved that it is out of the way and it went well. I felt like the organization of my interview was good but the challenges I faced were distractions that led me to pause during the interview.
    2. I finished my transcript just now and it took me around 5 hours to construct.
    3. The thing that stood out to me was the transition of him coming from India to the U.S. and how he adapted to our culture.

  7. 1) How do you feel about the interview now that you are done? What went well? What challenges did you face?

I feel as if the interview went well. He was very open top talk about his culture. It was tuff to get him to talk about himself. He also would not let me take a picture of him. I think these maybe cultural.

    2) Have you started your transcripts? How many hours of work do you estimate it is going to take you to finish the transcripts?

I finished my transcripts. They took apx 3.5 hours of actual work typing to complete. It took about 12 when you add in having an infant.

    3) What themes (for example: goals and dreams, family, work, creativity, sacrifice, etc.) stood out to you as most interesting in the interview?

Sacrifice sttod out the most to me. He had to leave his family and children in a refugee camp to come to the US. I can't imagine this. I think about it from time to time. I was so excited to get to talk with him about his experience. They are typically a very closed society. They don't talk about themselves much, so it was interesting. I know Americans are pretty jaded towards Somali people from movies such as Black Hawk Down. They make me angry too but I see not all Somalis were responsible for that. Most want the same thing we do, family, security and freedom to believe what they want.

  8. My interview seemed too jumpy I don't know why I kept jumping to different questions. I was scared that I wasn't recording audio so I kept checking and it distracted me. I did however learn a lot about Jared and the personal struggles he dealt with. The interview was hard to transcribe because of his thick accent!

  9. 1) How do you feel about the interview now that you are done? What went well? What challenges did you face?
I think my interview went well in general, it was great to be able to discuss the various family history and military past of my grandfather. One of issues that I faced was that my grandfather seemed rather jumpy and did not carry on like he normally would. In normal conversation he is more than willing to discuss the family in great lengths with many interesting stories. Unfortunately I had to keep asking in little questions to get more details, it seemed difficult for him to elaborate at times.

    2) Have you started your transcripts? How many hours of work do you estimate it is going to take you to finish the transcripts?
The transcript took me around six hours to complete my transcript.

    3) What themes (for example: goals and dreames, family, work, creativity, sacrifice, etc.) stood out to you as most interesting in the interview?
Throughout the interview the main themes were his past in the military and his family life. While in the end I used the information about the military because it had more of his opinions and unique views. I also found it to be really interesting to learn about our family history and the various stories about people.
